The ancient city of Ostia was one of the most importants ports of the ancient city of Rome. It is believed that around 100,000 people lived here. The city was abandoned due to an epidemic of malaria and after centuries being covered by the sand, the excavations began on the XX century.
Unlike
Pompei and Herculano the city of Ostia was abandoned gradually that's
why it's a as well preserved like those.
Ostia
Antica is pretty close to the city of Rome, only 30 kms. away.
Getting there is pretty easy and convenient by public transportation.
Take the B line of the subway (metropolitana) and get off in Piramide
station, there transfer to the suburban train Lido-Roma in Porta San
Paolo (both stations are next door) and get off in Ostia Antica
Station. It's the same integrated ticket for the metro and bus in
Rome. It costs 1,50€.
The old roman road Decumanus Maximus
crosses all the city and you will find all the sites along the way. I
was really surprised and although it is not as well preserved as
Pompei and Herculano, and if you like archeological sites, this is a
good getaway of the city. I got there early in the morning to skip
crowds and the hot sun.
